Temple Music I
COMPOSER: Jason Baskin
MEDIUM: Resonant Metals and Clay Pots
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 3
DURATION: ca. 3:30
PROGRAM NOTES:
Temple Music I is the first in a series of found object/open instrumentation pieces. It was heavily influenced by David Lang’s percussion solo, The Anvil Chorus, which introduced me to the idea of categorizing instruments as “resonant metals,” “semi-resonant metals,” and “non-resonant metals,” and presented me with a mature, established composer using a rhythmic language similar to what I was developing in my own style.
With an instrumentation of three resonant metals and five clay pots, the piece offers the performer a large degree of personal interpretation through selection of pitch set, resonant metals, and actuators, as well as the physical arrangement of the instruments around the performer.
